At Tai Chi for Health Marana, we focus on the health and wellness aspects of Tai Chi and Qigong. Our beginner tai chi classes emphasize safety first and foremost. Our goal is to help people brand new to tai chi learn at their own pace in a non-judgemental environment, and then progress them along their tai chi journey, wherever it may lead them.
We learn and practice tai chi as a gentle, slow moving internal practice. The process is low key, deliberate and intentful, and we never push a participant beyond their comfort zone - we can almost always devise modifications of any challenges you might face.
No prior Tai Chi or Martial Arts experience is required or assumed. In fact, those brand new to tai chi have the wonderful advantage of 'Beginner's Mind', a very powerful tool. We also have a number of participants who have encountered tai chi at some time in their past but paused their practice for any number of 'life get's in the way' reasons, but are now once again on the tai chi path with us.
Who attends our classes? Most participants are looking to improve their balance and prevent recurring falls. Other key reasons include Improved flexibility, Increased leg and core strength. Still others look toward reducing stress or managing anxiety. And of course, many people are simply looking for asocial interaction, and alow impact exercise that is easy on their joints and also FUN!
Our tai chi classes follow Dr. Paul Lam's modified Sun Style programs. Sun style tai chi is well suited for our needs, featuring a more upright stance than other tai chi styles, as well as the follow step, which assists in balance. More infromation about Dr Lam and his programs can be found at TaiChiForHealthInstitute.org, or by searching for Dr. Paul Lam on YouTube.
Our beginner tai chi classes can be performed seated for part or all of the session. Some participants do the entire class standing but have a chair at arm's length 'just in case'. Our standard practice is to try and MODIFY any form or movement that presents challenges to an individual, so no one is forced to operate outside their comfort zone.
